Mounting Flat Panel TVs

Flat panel televisions like LCD and plasma tvs are getting very popular. As they are thin and relatively light weight they can be mounted onto walls. Mounting a plasma or LCD tv makes them a joy to behold and watch. Thus if you have decided on mounting your flat panel TV to a wall in your home, you need to keep a few things in mind.

The things to take note are :

  • No1 - Location and weight of TV
  • No2 - Check if the wall is strong enough to support the TV
  • No3 - Get the correct bracket for the TV
  • No4 - Decide to hire professionals or DIY for the installation

First determine the location for the mounting and check the weight of the TV. Next check if the wall is a solid wall or hollow blocks. If wall is too weak to support change location or consider mounting on to other structures like the ceiling and floor.

After doing the above, check your tv weight and get the correct wall bracket system (There are different bracket systems for solid and hollow blocks walls ). Select one that is strong, sturdy and that can easily handle the weight of your TV. Hence do not try to save too much on the cost for the good of your system.

wall mount

If you can, it's good to get a wall mount that is specifically made for your TV model, but there are also good third party universal mounts available. A simple wall mount may just be bracket system for your flat panel tv to hang on and do not allow any adjustment. However there are more sophisticated types that have several rotation angles that make it possible to turn the TV if required. They also have hinge joints on their arms which makes it possible to extend the TV from the wall, or to push it back in. Wall mounts with swivels can even provide rotation of the TV around a horizontal axis. Again the advise for such an articulated system is to buy extra heavy duty.

The next step is to install the wall mount. Here you can decide whether to have professional installer to do it or you would like to take the DIY route. There are pros and cons of course for each and the main thing about getting professional installers is the cost. If you decide to let the professionals to do the installation, most likely the retailer where you buy the flat tv from would provide such service or they could recommend one. So it's a good idea to factor in the cost of having to engage professional installers in your mounting budget.

If you decide to do it yourself, than familiarity is important. If you are not then get some one who is familiar with such task to assist you. If not it is advisable to let professional to do it as installation task is not simply drilling holes at any spot in your wall and mount the hardware as there could be metal bars, electrical cables or weak zones, hence it has to be done correctly or the weight of the TV will simply pull the wallboard and the brackets down.

Once the bracket system is up and solidly anchored to the wall, you are almost done with the installation work. Now is to mount the flat panel tv to the bracket system and hook up the system to make sure everything is working fine. The final touch up is to hide the cables. You can do this by running the cables in the wall, or have them in conduits. The thing is not to have these cables hanging all over making thereby creating a look messy. With the cables properly tuck away, all that's left is to sit back, relax and enjoy the view. You can bet it will be an enjoyable experience for many years to come.
