40-inch LCD TV making more sales than 37-inch

Tag:No Tags

Came across an article in Digitimes.com with a survey carried out by DisplaySearch on the Top 10 best selling LCD TVs for the North American market in 2005. What’s suprising to note is Sony’s KDLV40XBR1, Bravia series 40 inch LCD TV. It ranked 4th in the list.

The Bravia series is one of the top selling model in the US market as can be seen from the extract of the report below.

“The Bravia LCD TV hit the market in late September, and in October was the top-selling model in the US market, according to Pacific Media Associates (PMA).”

So the question is “Why is the larger 40 inch LCD TV had a better sales than 37 inch LCD TV ?“. The reasons according to the report are:

  • Aggressive promotion by Sony which includes ramping up production and price reduction of the 40 inch panels.
  • Lack of vendors offering 37 inch LCD TV panels.

Thus these could be the reason too why the 37 inch LCD TV not making it to the top 10 LCD TV list. However this may change because according to AU Optronics ( A major LCD maker, Taiwan based), it’s much more cost competitive to produce 37 inch LCD TV panels. Hence expect to see more 37 inch LCD TV panels entering the market and hopefully making to the top 10 LCD TV list in the future.
