Sharp,Matsushita Increasing Investment For Flat TVs Production

Tag:No Tags

Saw Sharp’s president in CNN news talking about Sharp’s plan to spent about 200 billion yen ($1.75 billion) to increase it’s LCD production. Apparently flat tvs will be a hot commodity in 2006 and demands are projected to increase worldwide.

So just to confirm and to learn more about the details I went online looking for information on this news and came across this report in abc.go.news.com. Here is an extract :

. . .Japan’s top electronics companies, unveiled big investments on Wednesday, betting that demand for their key products would continue to soar.

Sharp plans to spend about 200 billion yen ($1.75 billion) to ramp up output at a cutting-edge liquid crystal display (LCD) plant being built in western Japan, aiming to meet fast-growing demand for LCD TVs worldwide.

That confirms what I heard in CNN about Sharp’s plans but reported in abc.go.news.com is Matsushita (Panasonic Brand) is doing the same too. This is not suprising as Matsushita is a major manucfacturer of plasma display panels and prior to Sharp’s announcement, a day earlier it had annouced of it’s plan to invest about $1.6 billion to built the world’s largests factory for plasma displays. Plasma and LCD are two competing technologies in flat tVs and it would be interesting to see how each turns out a year later.
