Sony’s Bravia LCD series

Things LCD or Plasma always give me the excitement. Not only had I developed an interest in these but also every time I come across them I will be thinking that it’s a possible material for my FlatTv blog.

Well the same goes for advertisement of these products. Now I like to take a closer view on them since starting this blog. And recently Sony had been advertising it’s Bravia brand of LCD TVs. The first thing that caught my attention is the price.

There are two series the S and V. The S series are cheaper by about $700, so why the difference I asked. Reading what little details provided gave no clues as to why the diffrence. So I decided to do a little reseach on this. The objective is to find out what causes the differences in the prices between the two seires. I picked the 40 inch model for my comparison. The models are :

Sony Bravia LCD

Sony Bravia KLVS40A10 S Series and Sony Bravia KLVV40A10 V Series 40 inch LCD Television Screen

I summarized my findings below starting with what the two series have in common.

  • Both series are 1 mega pixel (1366 x 768 WXGA ) HD Panel. They are HD ready with Picture in Picture funtion. Have the same response time of 8ms and viewing angle of 178 degrees.

That’s all for what’s in common and for the differences I listed down the major ones. These are :

  • Better back lit system - The V seires is using ( Wide Colour Gamut) WCG-CCFL system which Sony claimed it’s a more superior system than the conventional system. To see the difference between images using WCG-CCFL and images using the conventional system go here http://www.sony.co.nz/bravia and scroll down to about mid page. The image produced by WCG-CCFL system is bright and enhanced isn’t it?
  • Picture mode - The V series made use of Sony WEGA Engine circuit, this award-winning picture processing circuit is capable of processing all incoming video signals in true 100% digital, reducing unnecessary analog-to-digital conversion steps that would otherwise degrade the picture quality. WEGA Engine also features the industry’s first 14bit panel driver capable of delivering over 4 trillion colours.
  • Better brightness - In the V series it is 500cd/m2 while in S series it’s 480 cd/m2
  • Better contrast - It’s 1300:1 in the V series while it’s 1000:1 in the S series.
  • Better Sound system and more connection terminals

With all the extras and better features, that’s probably why the V series cost more. It’s worth it as you get better picture quality and lot’s of extras to make viewing television a pleasure. Below are two links for where I obtain the information for my comparison.
