LCD TV versus Plasma TV

Tag:, , , ,

Let’s go at this again. The question “Should I buy a Plasma or LCD TV? ” is one question I believe that’s commonly asked when deciding which to buy.

I happened to come across an article in a magazine which touched on this question and like to share it here. It’s a comparison between these two flat tvs.

  • Philip 37PF9830 - A 37 Inch LCD TV
  • Pioneer PDP436SXE - A 42 Inch Plasma TV

These two flat tvs are top of the range units in their respective categories. I did a summary of the comparison done in a table format for easy reference.

Here is the comparison and the verdict is at the end of the table.

LCD TV

PLASMA TV

Price

Though LCD prices are coming down, it is still
more expensive than a Plasma of the same size.

It is still cheaper when compare to LCD of the same size

Panel Life-Time Last as long as Plasma. Suffer from burn in of static images
Response Time Top end LCD not a problem but cheaper ones do get ghosting
of images
Not a problem
Contrast Ratio Has improved a great deal and as good as plasma except
for black levels.
A much better black levels than LCD but reflective screens make it worst for day time viewing.
Resolution LCD technology here has an edge over plasma Plasma technology, that’s using gas cells do lose out to LCD as images looks softer.
Viewing angle Wide angle viewing of up to 170 degree not a problem this days This used to be Plasma main advantages but LCD had caught up.
THE VERDICT

Best as an everday TV.

Images produced by LCD are sharp, detailed and vibrant ideal for TV.
However if you are looking for smooth motion and good black level, then a plasma will be suitable

Best for Movies

The larger screen and when in a dark room, the plasma TV is a great choice for those who watch lots of movies.

Thus both units can do the job well. So the deciding factor is depends on what one to use it for for most of the time. This offcourse is true provided that price is not a factor in the consideration. The indicated prices for the two units at the time of writing are :-

  • Philip 37PF9830 - $4,848
  • Pioneer PDP436SXE - $4,195
