Panasonic TH-42PX50U and TH-42PHD8UK, a Comparison
Panasonic Plasma TVs continues to be the best selling Plasma TVs above the 40-inch size. In this post I will be looking at the following Panasonic Plasma TVs, these are Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK and TH-42PX50U.
Both models screen size is 42-inch but the TH-42PHD8UK is the No 1 best selling model according to the list compiled in PlasmaTVbuyingguide.com. The TH-42PX50U ranks fourth (4th).
One reason and not unexpected as to why the TH-42PHD8UK is the more popular model is the the price. The TH-42PHD8UK is cheaper by about $900 dollars ( based on the initial list price in Amazon). So naturally the question asked is what are the reasons to the price difference between the two units. To find out I printed out the specification of these two units and make a study.
The specifications do show that there are differences but suprisingly it’s not in the image quality. Both units are HDTV and have a resolution of 1024 x 768. Reading from what’s explained in the specification it can be concluded that the image quality by both units are equally good thought they utilized different Panasonic’s technologies.
Thus the difference in prices, I believe are due to the built-in extras in the TH-42PX50U. Thus for an extra $900 you get the following which you will not find in the TH-42PHD8UK. These are:
# Cable CARD slot which allow the replacement of the cable box
# A better sound system utilizing BBE® ViVA High-Definition 3D Sound system.
# Built in two 13W speakers 3-D sound Speaker System.
# Built in TV tuners for the Standard Television and HDTV Broadcasts.
# 2 tuner Picture in Picture functions and the PIP image size are scalable.
# Anti-Reflective Screen Coating.
# HDMI high definition digital interface.
# The Director Home Theater remote control.
These are probably the reasons for the diferences in price but I still dont understand about the remote control. Anyway coming back to the question of “Would someone folk out an additional $900 plus for these?”
Well Why not? right, if one gets great image quality, convenience in receiving HDTV broadcast, a better sound quality thus giving a real cinematic viewing experience. Thus I am sure it is a resounding “YES” to the question.
However if I am buying on a budget, I may have to let these pass and go for the TH-42PHD8UK which is a great deal for money according to CNET’s opinion. But hold on. . . . the latest pricing shows that the TH-42PX50U is currently on offer and the offer price is about $3000, that’s $600 off the initial listed price and with this massive discount, the price difference is down to about $300. Now if you ask me, I say this is an incredible deal and I am changing my mind about getting the TH-42PHD8Uk and shoot for the TH-42PX50U instead.
